Letter: Proposed Bylaw Amendments to Allow STVRs in Sidney

On Monday, September 24th, Council will be providing a public hearing to listen to input regarding proposed amendments to the Zoning Bylaw to allow regulation of Short Term Vacation Rentals (STVRs) in Sidney. Currently, STVRs are all illegal in Sidney, but several dozen exist, provoking concerns that short term rental of housing is displacing potential long term rentals within our extremely low vacancy rate rental market. Some complaints from neighbours have also been received by Sidney's bylaw enforcment office regarding noise, parking conflicts and security concerns at some STVR locations.

As a resident concerned about availability of rental housing, and as someone whose income partially depends on the tourist segment who appear to prefer STVRs and Bed and Breakfasts for their stay in Sidney, I provided a letter to Council to support the proposed bylaw amendments.

Fire Hall - letter submission regarding variances

I submitted a letter regarding the Development Variance Permit Application for the old firehall site, which will be discussed at the September 4, 2018 Special Council Meeting starting at 7 pm.

Letter in full below the jump. This was a hard one for me - as someone dedicated to transitioning to a lower carbon future with a more resilient local economic and environmental base, advocating a position that includes building more parking than proposed was uncomfortable. However, it's where the facts lead based on the data for this site and the needs of others in the community; meeting the community where it is, exercising democracy and and letting data inform our decisions is a bigger part of building a resilient community, and that is the priority for me.
